Do We Really Need Word Verification? Plus Awards!

One of the things I left out on my Looks Matter in the Blogging World post is word verification (WV). Did I mention that it drives me nuts? No? Didn't think so. At least one other of those 65 people who commented on Elana's post mentioned it too. It's just another layer that burns time and slows us down when reading and commenting on other blogs.

Here's my question: are there really dementoids out there waiting to hack in and make comments? Or computer programs that are busily sending out bots or whatever those feel-y things are to, uh-oh, wait, wait, drop some spam in my comments section?

Once I realized WV annoys the ever-lovin' outta me, I turned mine off. Doesn't it make it sooo much easier to leave a comment on my blog? If I get spammed, well, shoot. I might just have to take a fraction of a minute and, um, delete it!

My buddy, Eric W. Trant at Digging With the Worms, turned his on the other day and made a game out of making up sentences with it. Now that was fun. I even got a fun little snippet for my wip out of that game. But having to do WV every single time I want to comment on your blog? Ugh. Because chances are high that if I'm over there reading your post, I'll want to comment, too. Come on. Make it easy, k?

Now that I shared that peeve, here's my wip report. 22,009 words as of 1:18 a.m. EDT. I missed my goal of 22,000 by the 30th, my birthday. But only by an hour and eighteen minutes. So in my book, I dunnit. Yeehaaa!

Lastly (I think), thank you to Suzie, at Writer Junkie, for sending me some link love in the form of One Lovely Blog Award. Awww. Thank you, Suzie! Go check her blog out, this amazing woman has three! romance wips going at once. She's also a new writer for Critique This WIP.

1.Accept the award, post it on your blog together with the name of the person who has granted the award and her/his blog. (check)
2. Pass the award to 15 other blogs that you've newly discovered. (oh, man, more linky thingys, does anyone know an easier way to do that??)
3. Contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award. (I'll be around soonly.)

Postscript: Grown Ups is a sweet movie with enough belly laughs to satisfy. I stuck around until the end of the credits and was rewarded with this song. Adam Sandler wrote it for his dad a couple of years ago. I dedicate it to all our dads:

THANK YOU! Word verification has been burnin my butt lately. I don't mind so much when the word is down below as I'm typing my comment. I know it's coming, I can handle it. But it drives me ten kinds of crazy when it pops up 5 seconds after hitting "post comment". ARGH!

I also wonder why some words are easy (I had water the other day) and then others are long and awkward to type...if you can make them out at all.

(deep breaths)

So, yeah. I feel you on that one.

Congrats on your award!

Olivia, I'm such a dolt! how did I not see my name on the award list? Sheesh. My son must have been using me as a jungle gym while I was reading!

Thank you so much! Very much appreciated.

I could have sworn I already commented on this post?!?! Maybe I just thought I did...

Anywhoooo........ :)

Happy WAY-Late Birthday!! :D

The WV drove me nuts too when I was trying to post on everyone's blog during a blogfest, so I turned mine off (I believe. If I'm wrong, correct me! And I will!!)

You're very welcome for the award. And many, many {{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}} for the sweet and generous mention of me and CTW on your blog. You rock, girl! ;)

As for Adam Sandler... I love him! His songs, movies... pretty much anything he does (with the exception of Punch Drunk Love... way off on that one!). I really enjoyed the video. And I NEVER watch video on blog posts.

I feel that way about WV, I'm always delighted when I can comment the quick way.
Thank you for the Award :)
I'll be passing them along soon as term winds down properly.

Thank you all. And you're welcome, too. It's so great meeting other writers. I love both receiving AND giving these awards. And I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't like WV.

I probably shoulda done two posts instead of one, huh? Oh well.

Gotta remember that for in the future. Write two and set one up to post later on a day I don't HAVE a post. Hmm...:)

Suzie, I'm so glad you like the AS video! :)

I took capcha (word verification) off my blog a while back and haven't really noticed any real negative effects. The spam seems to come on my older posts which get filtered. Not sure I understand those spammers techniques, but it all gets deleted when it comes my way.

Thanks for the award. As per my custom I will put this up on my Saturday post. You made it just in time to get recognized tomorrow (July 3).

Yep; take your rewards and feel good. 22,009 is pretty good on a WIP. I don't even want to admit to when the last time I worked on anything besides blogfests was.

I took WV off my blog too (say thankya) and I hope it is easier for folks to comment and dash. I'm not sure though; b/c when I leave a comment on my own blog I click post comment, and it comes back and I have to do it again. So, if my commenters are having to stick around a couple times even without the word verif, its not a convenience.

No complaints yet, but hey, let me know if it doesn't work like yours. One click and it shows up. For me, I think what keeps spammers away not allowing annonymous comments. I'd like for the name/URL to be turned on, but I don't know how to do that.

Thanks for the Lovely Blog award.

You keep doin what yer doin; it's working fine. Have a great holiday weekend.

Thanks for the award. Regarding word verification, I only turned mine on (along with comment moderation, because some still sneak through) once the spammers showed up.

Just found you and enjoyed the read but.....

I have been hit by spam and spent two days deleting comments selling viagra and other modern chemicals. My WV is on, I did not want it on but I do not want to be a drug solicitor either.

Stu and Jules, thanks for the heads-up. I'll be on the lookout and hope that I won't be taking days to delete any caca that sneaks through.

Donna, I sailed right through on your comments today, yay!
